The San Marcos Fifth Dimension, located in Southern
California, is a collaborative effort between the University and the community.
The Boys and Girls Club of Escondido provides the site and the children, while
California State University San Marcos provides the undergraduate staff. The
undergraduates are enrolled in the Psychology 495 course: "Field Experience in
Psychological Settings." The requirements for the course include attending a
weekly class session to discuss readings and research-related activities, and
fulfilling the roles of Wizard Assistants at the Fifth Dimension. The Fifth
Dimension operates after school (3-5pm) on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The site is housed in the computer room at the Boys and Girls Club, and is an extremely popular activity, with children signing up on a long waiting list, and peeking into the computer room impatiently before the beginning of site. The site coordinator matches undergraduate students up with the children, and they work together on focused one-on-one activity.
