Connecticut College Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology

The Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology at Connecticut College is offering a postdoctoral fellowship in new media and the digital arts. This is a two-year appointment, commencing in fall 2008, that emphasizes both teaching and scholarship. The fellowship is one of five, each located in an interdisciplinary academic center and supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology at Connecticut College brings together faculty and students who study and contribute to the symbiotic relationship between technology and the arts. The center sponsors a certificate program for students in arts and technology, which includes courses, an internship and a year-long project. The responsibilities of the fellow will include imparting to arts and technology students a critical understanding of the historical, cultural and social contexts in which new media art forms converge. This position will involve an exciting mix of research and teaching, theory and practice. Candidates must have their doctoral degree by the starting date. Those who received their doctorate over four years ago are ineligible to apply.

The Ammerman Center fellow will teach one course per semester and will engage in tutorials and research projects with undergraduate students. The fellow will have research and teaching support from faculty and will have opportunities to engage with other fellows. Other responsibilities of the fellow will include attending bi-weekly workshops on teaching methods sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and participating in a two-week summer workshop on the use of digital and web-based technology for teaching. All fellows will be expected to give public presentations on topics related to their research, and will advise students who are interested in their field of specialization. Fellows will also work closely with faculty on a collaborative research project.

A focus of the fellowship will include teaching an introductory course exposing students to contemporary practices in, and critical discourse about, the digital arts, as well as selected historical antecedents. An intermediate level course will be team-taught with arts and technology faculty, and will guide the students in the complex process of integrating theory and practice. This course will allow students to develop projects collaboratively with the fellow, culminating in a public presentation. A third course will be an advanced course in a topic of the fellow's specialty. The fellow will also be expected to participate in the senior seminar for certificate students and will become involved with other center faculty in their ongoing collaborative work.

The Mellon Fellowships offer a stipend of $52,000 per year, plus benefits, as well as an additional stipend to help offset expenses for research, scholarly activities, equipment and travel.

Review of applications will begin March 3 and continue until the position is filled. Please send a C.V., a writing sample of no more than 25 pages or its equivalent in an appropriate medium, a statement of research interests, and three letters of reference to
