The majority of the undergraduates who work with the children and attend the community sites are part of a combined lecture and laboratory course offered at the University of California, San Diego. HDP 135 / COMT 116: Practicum in Child Development is a course sponsored through the Human Development Program and Department of Communication that provides students an opportunity to study, in real life settings, the role of communicative and cultural phenomena in intellectual development. In class as well as during site visits, students apply theoretical perspectives to promote children’s and their own intellectual, social and academic development.
Undergraduates from Palomar Community College taking a course entitled CS 102: The Chicano and the American Political System also take part of the activities at La Clase Magica. The course takes a basic and practical approach to understanding and utilizing the American political system and includes a critical evaluation of leading issues affecting Chicanos as well as a survey of social and political organizations within the community.
