| Research Interests: | I entered the program with plans to extend my research on bilingual communities and academic success, particularly in relation to reading and spelling ability. Although I am still interested in multicultural issues, my research interests have diverged from this original area. Roughly, I am interested in gender issues in communities composed of disadvantaged youth. I am currently working on two projects that touch upon this: 1) I am working with Dr. Mike Cole at a learning center in Barrio Logan, San Diego through the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition (LCHC). The center is located in a low income housing community mainly inhabited by African Americans. Here, I am looking at gender differences within the student population who attend the center and rituals that propagate gender roles. 2) I plan on examining the roles of young Islamic females living in the banlieues of major cities in France (i.e., Paris, Lyon). This project entails looking at issues surrounding veiling, national identity formation, and social space. In the future, I may decide to do a comparative analysis between these two populations. Other buzz words (in relation to my interests) are territoriality, availability, clothing/fashion, media influences, language, and visual culture. |
