| Research Interests: | Having spent portions of the last several years as an 18th century first mate at the San Diego Maritime Museum, Redcoat reenactor in the Revolutionary War towns of New England, student of U.S. History, and bohemian cinema-verite-style videomaker, I am delighted to have found a home in the Communication Department. I am currently excited to learn more about the newsreels and documentary films made in 1960s Cuba, where the revolutionary government funded thousands of non-fiction film projects in its effort to create a socialist culture. Subjectivity and a formal acknowledgment of technical “underdevelopment,” signposts of poor journalism by professional standards in the United States, came to legitimize truth claims in a number revolutionary Cuban newsreels and documentaries. I’m curious to track the legacies of these divergent representations of “the real.” More generally, I’m interested in the role of cultural productions in identity formation and community building, the relationship between history and memory, non-fiction filmmaking, and social movement political strategies. I’m also an irredeemable sports junkie (particularly for the NBA and pickup hoops) and b-grade 80s movie fan. |
