I'm a new transfer student. What courses should I take my first quarter?

Transfer students are recommended to enroll in COMM 10 and COMM 100A for Fall 17. Students must fill out a pre-authorization request online to take COMM 100A once they have enrolled in COMM 10. Please review the question below on how to do so.

In addition to COMM 10 and COMM 100A, transfer students can also enroll in an Intermediate Elective. Students must fill out a pre-authorization request in order to take an Intermediate Elective once they have enrolled in COMM 10. Please see two questions below on how to do so.

The department only recommends transfer students taking at most 3 COMM courses your first quarter and pairing it with a college requirement course (if the student has any) or a course of interest from a different department.

Courses abroad can count up to 2 courses toward the major as COMM intermediate electives. Each course must be at least 4 units, UC transferable, upper division, and be taken for a letter grade.

Once you have returned from studying abroad, students will need to submit a petition with syllabus upon return to Valerie Ky, Undergraduate Advisor. It may take at least 2 weeks for the petition to be reviewed and reflect the changes to be made on your degree audit.

Students minoring in COMM cannot petition any study abroad courses and courses taken outside of the department (including COMM 198 and 199) to statisfy any minor requirements.

How do I sign up for AIP?

Contact the Academic Internship Program Office located at the Teaching + Learning Commons at Giesel Library (lower level, west wing).

For the academic year: Once a student is enrolled in AIP 197, COMM students must also enroll in COMM 193 (2 unit course) for the designated faculty advisor to receive teaching credit. There will be no additional academic work for enrolling in COMM 193.

For the summer: COMM students only need to enroll in AIP 197. There is no designated faculty advisor for AIP 197. Students are encouraged to seek their own faculty sponsor.

COMM 198 is a group study done with a professor of your choice. COMM 199 is an independent study done with a professor of your choice. The first COMM 198 or 199 can count as one Communication Elective. If you want to do another one, you must petition with the department.
