COMMUNICATION GENERAL

COGN 150
Required Senior Seminar (4) – Robert Horwitz
Title: Communication and Religion
W 9:00 – 11:50 TMCA 127
Section ID 719968
Prerequisite: Senior standing

Most scholars accepted the secularization thesis, that as society became more modern and standards of living rose, the importance of religion would diminish and would be confined to the private sphere. Instead, over at least the last 30 years or so, religion in the United States, evangelical Protestantism in particular, has become a prominent feature in American culture and politics. The course examines this phenomenon, looking at the relationship between religion, communication, culture, and politics in the United States. Topics to be covered include fundamentalism and its transformation with the creation of the Moral Majority, the culture wars, televangelism and the popular culture of religion, the new Christian right as the base of the Republican Party. Prerequisite: Senior Standing.

COGN 150
Required Senior Seminar (4) – Carl McKinney
Title: Communicating Sex
Th 3:00 – 5:50 MCC 201
Section ID 726475
Prerequisite: Senior Standing

This seminar explores the politics and practices of producing, distributing, and consuming representations of human sex and sexuality. Using historical and theoretical work on sexuality, visual culture, human interaction, media technologies, communication law, and the entertainment industries, we will critically assess a variety of written, visual, and interactive texts and engage ongoing debates about the social, cultural, and political values of sexual representation. Students will develop research projects culminating in a seminar paper that reflects critical analysis of relevant issues and texts. Though this seminar is not specifically about pornography, this will necessarily be an area of inquiry. Understanding the politics of sexual representation requires attention to the classification of particular representations as pornographic, rather than artistic, erotic, educational, or scientific. Students should be prepared to read texts and view images that they may find offensive. Prerequisite: Senior Standing.

COGN 150
Required Senior Seminar (4) Camille Campion
Title: Telling Stories
Prerequisites: Senior standing
Lecture: MW 5:00 - 7:50 in MCC 133
Section ID: 719284

Description: How do stories communicate knowledge and construct meaning? Furthermore, how can we use people's personal experiences to illuminate real and abstract issues? This seminar will explore practical and research uses of personal stories across a range of contexts and mediums. We will focus on life stories, life histories, and personal narratives and what they reveal about identity, community, and society. We will concentrate especially on race, gender, and activism.  During the seminar, students will learn how to document, analyze and present life stories. Since the seminar is oriented toward a finished product, we will spend considerable time on the projects and relevant research skills, coupled with reviewing a reasonable number of texts, films and music that illuminate the construction and dissemination of life stories.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION _ This course will require a lab meeting on MW 3:30 – 5:00 SO PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE ACCORDINGLY. THE FULL TIME COMMITMENT FOR THIS CLASS WILL BE MW 2:00 – 5:00.

This course will be a practicum-style, largely hands-on course that investigates the practical and theoretical foundations of creating a new form of University-Community communicative system involving UCSD and two communities in Southeast and South San Diego. Students will engage with faculty and students from Communication and Visual Arts to design and put into action a variety of computer-based and telecommunications design activities for area youth. They will both engage in the activities with the youth and participate in a broader effort to use an advanced digital video display combined with state of the art conferencing facilities that can link these three locales in San Diego in a new variety of community to community communication.

Class meets twice weekly, Monday and Wednesday from 2-5 at one of the Community facilities. Class will consist of two parts each time: discussion and examination of key readings relevant to the project around which the course is organized followed by collaborative work with local youth on computer-based design work for which no special prior knowledge is required. Student work will be evaluated in terms of week participation in the activity at the site and a final project, to be conducted in small groups with the local youth.

The course will meet at the community site. Arrangements for transportation made as part of admission to class. Prerequisites: Upper division standing.
