Honors Seminar, COGN 191B, Winter 2007
Department of Communication, University of California , San Diego
Selected Wednesdays, 5-8 pm , MCC 125
Instructor: Ferruh Yilmaz
Office Hours: Mondays 1-3 pm (Sequoyah 113)

This quarter is for intensive writing. Writing a 45-50 page paper is not the same as writing 4-5 term papers; it does not simply quadruple the workload. Writing an honors thesis is an entirely different experience in that the organization of the paper and the analytical work that goes into it is very different from a term paper. It is, therefore, extremely important that you keep the writing deadlines if you do not want to be overwhelmed at the end of the quarter. My assessment of your progress will be a part of your overall grade. As stated in the guidelines for the Honors Program, your attendance in the seminars and successful completion of a research or creative product forms the basis of your final letter grade. Honors awards are not automatic: being accepted into the program does not mean being awarded honors. The award depends on the quality of your paper.

Deadlines

The deadlines are carefully designed to fit with group meetings, meetings with your academic advisor and meetings with me. To get feedback from fellow students, your advisor and me, you must provide drafts before the meetings.

Group meetings and report

Group members read and comment each others' drafts. Each group reports back to me via email after the meetings. The group reports should include two elements: 1) an overview of general problems and discussions, 2) a detailed paragraph from each member about his/her project. Group members should take turn in collecting the individual paragraphs and reporting back from workshops.

Meetings with your advisor

I will help you with organizing and writing your paper. However, you are expected to discuss theoretical and analytical aspects of your work with your advisors. Schedule your meetings in well advance and email them drafts of your paper at least three days before you meet them.

Grading

Those students who receive a grade of B or B+ on their Honors project, and who have at least 3.25 GPA in the major will be awarded the designation “with distinction.” Students who receive an A on their Honors project and who have at least a 3.5 GPA in the major will be awarded the designation “with high distinction,” and those who receive an A and have at least a 3.75 GPA will be awarded the designation “with highest distinction.”
