Engeström's research involves the mediational processes of cognition,
communication, and learning related to transformations in work and
organizations. His research questions how people can gain control
over their collaborative practices and technologies in conditions
of complex and contradictory change. He is currently studying teams
and networks in a variety of work settings and cultures. He uses cultural-historical
activity theory, initiated by Vygotsky and Leont'ev, and a multi-method
approach called developmental work research.
