Mediatization, Celebrity, Popular Culture, New Media, Television

Alex's research focuses on the construction and uses of celebrity within contemporary US culture. He looks at how technology, social media, and reality television have played a role in turning celebrity into a logic that increasingly organizes and shapes knowledge production and social life. He also explores whether celebrities can serve as effective political representatives for marginalized groups. Prior to UCSD, he spent a decade working as a brand and personal publicist in the entertainment industry.
