Her documentary work focuses on the complex interactions of gender,
race and representation in relation to the Middle East. Her concern
with these issues is directly informed by her multicultural experiences
of having lived abroad (in Egypt and Europe) and having an Egyptian
father and an American mother.
In Covered (1995), Tania uses a conventional documentary style to
examine the reasons behind womens choices to veil in Cairo,
Egypt. Hollywood Harems (2000) uses footage appropriated from a
wide range of Hollywood films to explore and deconstruct stereotypes
of women and challenge issues of gender, Orientalism, and Otherness.
Her most recent project, Cairo Chronicles explores cross-cultural
or hybrid identities like hers that are prevalent due
to the plethora of travel, intermarriage, fusing of cultures through
communications, and globalization. Cairo Chronicles is a nostalgic
tribute that casts a critical look at modern Cairo, an urban legacy
of colonialism.
Tania's documentary work
has an international audience. Her productions have been screened
in competitive festivals in the U.S. and abroad and have been broadcast
on public television. They are distributed internationally by Women
Make Movies.
Tania's background in
journalism has been instrumental in her development as a documentary
filmmaker. She has applied the investigative and analytical skills
that she learned as a reporter to researching and producing her
film and video work. She was the Vatican Radio correspondent for
five years as well as a stringer in radio and print for several
news organizations. She has also produced a number of short films
and music videos
