B.A. Communication Requirements - Effective FA 2013

13 Courses Required

All courses must be taken for a letter grade. 

1 Lower Division Core Course

  • COMM 10: Introduction to Communication

4 Upper Division Core Courses

  • COMM 100A: Communication, the Person, and Everyday Life (Prereq: COMM 10)
  • COMM 100B: Communication, Culture, and Representation (Prereq: COMM 10)
  • COMM 100C: Communication, Institutions, and Power (Prereq: COMM 10)
  • COMM 190: Junior Seminar (Prereq: junior standing or higher, COMM 10, at least one COMM 100 course)

*Core courses must be taken at UCSD

8 Upper Division Electives

  • Max of 6 Intermediate Electives may be taken from COMM 101 - 119 (Prereq: COMM 10)
  • At least 2 Advanced Electives are required from COMM 120 - 189 (Prereq: COMM 10 and at least one COMM 100 course)

Note: If students choose to do a COMM 198 or COMM 199, the grading option is Pass/No Pass and only ONE may be applied to the major to satisfy a COMM Intermediate Elective. Students must submit a Special Studies Courses petition.

Note: If students choose to do AIP 197, students must also submit a Special Studies Courses petition for approval to have the course satisfy an upper division elective. 

Students can petition for a max of 2 courses taken outside of the department (AIP 197, EAP, or other UC campus courses).


 

Major Residency Requirements

Students are required to complete at least 11 classes of their overall work in the major at UCSD. The following are the Communication courses required to be taken at UCSD. Please see your college advisor for further residency requirements.
