Aaron Gozum

Doctoral Student

Aaron Gozum (he/they) is a Filipinx American academic, artist and activist. He conducts research on Filipinx cultural production and its engagement with modern humanist discourses. He organizes with Malaya Movement, a US-based organization that upholds Filipino democracy, human rights and sovereignty. He conducts research on Filipinx cultural production and its engagement with modern humanist discourses. Currently focused on Filipinx activist art, musical theatre, and representation in popular culture as it engages with the histories and knowledges that authorize dominant conceptions of being human, Aaron explores the limits and possibilities of creative practices and social reproductive activities for transforming survival and life-making under modern conditions of the global empire of capital. His broader academic interests include aesthetics, cultural studies, performance theory, sound studies, transnational feminisms, queer theory, and critical theories of race and subjectivity.

Aaron has taught as a teaching assistant for several undergraduate courses at San Francisco State University, New York University, and UC San Diego. Topics he has taught on include communication research strategies, media and communication history, semiotics, and audiovisual production. Aaron is also committed to supporting young scholars throughout their undergraduate careers, especially if they are seeking advice on navigating academia as a person of color in the LGBTQ+ community. He is open to emails from current and past undergraduate students as well as prospective applicants to the graduate program.

Aaron received a Master of Arts in Media, Culture and Communication from New York University (NYU) in 2019 and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from San Francisco State University (SFSU) in 2015.
