Recently Admitted Transfer Students

Congratulations and welcome!ug-new-admits-cool-classes

We have compiled the following suggestions for you to follow as you begin the process of becoming a UC San Diego Communication scholar. We urge you to review this information before you register and enroll in classes. Students recently admitted to UC San Diego do not have access to our departmental Academic Advising until you have registered and enrolled. Until then, please contact your college for advising.

Overview

To be considered a full-time student, please enroll in at least 12 units.

Take at least 2 COMM courses for fall quarter (this will give you 8 units).

  • Course Plan Option 1: enroll in COMM 10 and COMM 100A
  • Course Plan Option 2: enroll in COMM 10 and one COMM Intermediate Course (COMM 101 through 119)
  • Work with your college advisor to choose other courses to take for the fall quarter.

IMPORTANT!

If you need disability accommodations please make sure you make an appointment with the Office of Disabilities as soon as possible to ensure you receive your accommodations when the quarter begins. Please refer to our OSD page linked here.

COURSE PLAN OPTION 1

For the fall quarter, new transfer students are recommended to enroll in COMM 10 and 100A at the same time. In order to do so, students must fill out a pre-authorization request online for approval to take COMM 100A. Students will receive approval for COMM 100A only if they are enrolled in COMM 10 (waitlisted is not considered as enrolled). Students will be denied approval for COMM 100A if they are waitlisted in COMM 10.

Please follow these instructions on how to do so:

  1. Check to see when your enrollment day and time is.
  2. On your enrollment day and time, add and enroll in COMM 10 (WAITLISTED IS NOT ENROLLED).
***If you are waitlisted in COMM 10, please do not proceed to the next step. Please wait until you get off the waitlist. Please be patient in the process and begin to enroll in backup courses. If you do get off the waitlist for COMM 10, you can proceed to Step #3.***

  3. Once you have enrolled in COMM 10 (not waitlisted), submit your pre-authorization request online for COMM 100A
Please write in the justification section: I am enrolled in COMM 10 and would like to take COMM 100A at the same time. You do not need to submit any attachments.
  4. Your request will be routed to the COMM Advisor for review.
  5. Once you have received approval via email, please go back to WebReg and enroll in COMM 100A

COURSE PLAN OPTION 2

Another plan for new transfer students is to enroll in COMM 10 and a COMM Intermediate Elective (COMM 101 through 119).

Please wait to see if you will get off the waitlist. Please be patient in the process and begin to enroll in backup courses. If you do get off the waitlist for COMM 10, you can proceed to Step #3.***

  3. Once you have enrolled in COMM 10 (not waitlisted), submit your pre-authorization request online to take one COMM Intermediate Elective: any course numbered 101-119
Please write in the justification section: I am enrolled in COMM 10 and would like to take one COMM Intermediate Elective at the same time. You do not need to submit any attachments.
  4. Your request will be routed to the COMM Advisor for review.
  5. Once you have received approval via email, please go back to WebReg and enroll in the COMM Intermediate Elective course afterwards.

If you would like to enroll in a third COMM course, you can enroll in another Intermediate Elective course (any COMM courses from 101 to 119). If you are interested in either of these courses, please fill out a second pre-authorization request once you have added and enrolled in COMM 10.

Please wait to see if you will get off the waitlist. Please be patient in the process and begin to enroll in backup courses. If you do get off the waitlist for COMM 10, you can proceed to Step #3.***

  3. Once you have enrolled in COMM 10 (not waitlisted), submit your pre-authorization request online to take a COMM Intermediate Elective course.
Please write in the justification section: I am enrolled in COMM 10 and would like to take COMM Intermediate Elective at the same time.
You do not need to submit any attachments.
  4. Your request will be routed to the COMM Advisor for review.
  5. Once you have received approval, please go back to WebReg and enroll in the COMM Intermediate Elective course afterwards.

The department only recommends transfer students taking at most 3 COMM courses your first quarter and pairing it with a college requirement course (if the student has any) or a course of interest from a different department.
